As many as 33 miners are unaccounted for in a coal mine on the west coast of New Zealand‘s South Island

The explosion at Pike River Coal‘s underground mine near the town of Greymouth was reported by two miners who managed to walk out from another area of the pit.

The fate of the others remains unknown.

There have been no communications with those left underground.

The mine’s emergency services are trying to determine who is still in the mine.

Ambulances and rescue helicopters are at the scene and family members and friends have also started to arrive.

The Pike River mine is the source of high-grade coal used in steel production.

It only began production last year.
