A notorius leader of the Mexican Gulf drug cartel was gunned down on Friday by government security forces.
Antonio Ezequiel Cardenas Guillen, 48, otherwise known as “Tony the Storm,” Marcos Ledezma, Tony Tormenta, and Licenciado, died in a gunfight between the mobsters and security forces in the border city of Matamoros.
He was one of the eleven most wanted Mexican fugitives on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency‘s list, and was, along with other Gulf Cartel associates, responsible for multi-ton shipments of marijuana and cocaine from Mexico to the United States. The D.E.A. had offered a $5 million reward for information that could have led to his capture.
Friday’s clash also claimed the lives of three other cartel members, as well as two sailors from the Mexican Navy.
“Today was another significant step in the destruction of criminal organizations that have done so much to damage the people of this country,” Alejandro Poire, security spokesman for the Mexican government, said Friday.
