A monster storm barreled through the US Midwest on Tuesday, tearing apart properties and leaving more than 220,000 homes and businesses without power.

The band of severe thunderstorms stretched over 1,000 kilometres, creating at least a dozen tornadoes in areas between Kentucky and Wisconsin.

In Indiana buildings were ripped apart by tornadoes.

80,000 or more households lost power in and around Chicago, after Illinois was lashed.

The storms caused the cancellation of hundreds of flights at O’Hare airport and disruption to shipping traffic on the Great Lakes.

Forecasters have said the most powerful storm system to hit the region in decades is now heading toward Canada, where tornado watches are now in place.

No deaths were reported in the bad weather, although car crash incidents were phoned in as vehicles were buffeted by the strong winds.

Severe thunderstorms have been forecast for cities including Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Charleston, Birmingham, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York, with blizzard conditions observed in South Dakota.
