A possible oil layer has been found on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico up to 80 miles from the Macondo oil well.
Scientists, studying core samples from the area, have found what appears to be thick oil ranging from 1/4 inch up to 2 inches deep.
The University of Georgia research team has told CNN that samples taken up to 80 miles from the well were found to contain what appears to be surface oil that has now sunk to the bottom of the ocean.
The research team is still to officially confirm whether the substance is oil and that it came from BP’s well.
Millions of gallons of crude oil was flushed into the ocean after the April explosion and fire on the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform.
